Building Connections: New Admin
This year, Saint Joseph High School welcomed two new faces to its administration team: Dean of Students Alex Klunder and Assistant Principal Ashley Smith. While their responsibilities differ, both work together to build stronger connections with students and staff.
For Mr. Klunder, who taught math last year, the transition into administration was fueled by his desire to have a wider impact.
“As a teacher, I could influence 120 students a day, which is amazing,” he said. “But in administration, I can impact the teachers who are impacting students, and I get to see the student body as a whole.”
Mr. Klunder views his role through three main lenses: academics, attendance, and behavior. While discipline is part of the job, he emphasizes being proactive over punitive.
“I’m not walking the hallways looking for kids doing things wrong,” he said. “My goal is growth—helping students get better and leaving St. Joe stronger than when they came in.”
Mrs. Smith, who has years of experience in education leadership and previously worked in charter schools across the country, is focusing on supporting teachers so they can better serve students.
“Ultimately, everything we do is for kids,” she said. “Even when I’m working with teachers, the end goal is always student success.”
Though her position centers on instruction, testing, and staff support, Mrs. Smith is committed to being present for students as well.
“You’ll see me in the hallways, at lunch, and at events. I want students to know I’m someone they can come to,” she said.
Her advice to high schoolers: “Don’t be afraid to be yourself. Instead of asking ‘Who should I be?’—ask, ‘Who do I want to be?’”
With Mr. Klunder and Mrs. Smith working closely alongside Principal Joe Rommel, the new leadership structure offers clearer roles and stronger communication. More importantly, it highlights the school’s commitment to student growth, connection, and support.
