Finding self-care that works for you

Self care is not restricted to doing a face mask, taking a bath, going on a walk, or watching your favorite show. Some alternative ways are, playing video games, reading, dancing, or playing your favorite sport. Self care is very important especially for teens with the stress of school, relationships, and any activities outside of school.

“When it comes to your mental health, self-care can help you manage stress, lower your risk of illness, and increase your energy,”  an article from The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) said.

Self care can look very different from person to person, so it’s important to find things that work for you.

“My interests such as art and illustration, makeup, jewelry making, plants, reading, friends; are all something I do as self-care to benefit myself,” Cadence Kempf, 12 said.

Many people see self care as primarily doing things to boost your mental health, but self care also includes things such as scheduling a doctor's appointment, taking your medicine on time, and eating healthy along with other things. Not all types of self care have to be clinical though, many people enjoy online shopping or getting their favorite meal as forms of self care.

“Taking the time to wash my face, use a cleanser or serum, do my makeup, wear a flattering outfit, buying that drink, buying that menu item, buying those shoes, or getting my hair done––just taking the time out of my day to do something for myself that will boost my serotonin affects my mood extremely well.” Cadence said.

Exercise is a great way to clear your mind and keep yourself healthy. You don’t have to have a strict or intense workout plan to receive the benefits. Going for a walk or a hike can be a great way to relieve stress while taking care of your body and getting exercise.

“Exercise helps promote the growth of new neurons in key areas of the brain, including the hippocampus. Some research suggests that this may play a role in relieving symptoms of some psychiatric conditions including depression and anxiety,”  Katharina Star, a licensed counselor and writer for verywell mind said.

Figuring out what kinds of self-care work best for your overall health is important. Everybody is unique, so self-care has to be too. Take some time to yourself and take a break.
