“Don’t Say Good Luck” brings audiences to tears

Whether you have seen ads on social media or have watched the movie yourself, you know that “Don’t Say Good Luck” starring Sunny Sandler is not one to miss. The newly released movie premiered on August 14 on Netflix and featured snippets of “Waitress” the musical.

The plot follows Sophie Birenbaum as she navigates high school while also being the lead in her school’s musical, “Waitress.” Additionally, her mom struggles with metastatic cancer, helping Sophie realize what really matters in the end.

Catching audiences worldwide, it left watchers tearful and motivated to cherish every moment with loved ones. After watching the movie twice, Emily Hartsell, 10 knew it was an immediate favorite.

“I would rate it a 10/10 because it made me cry, and I love movies that make me cry,” she said.

Although most reviews were positive, there were some disappointments. Like many others, Cali Cohen, 10 felt the movie producers could have done some things differently.

“I didn’t like the ending. I also would have liked more of Sunny Sandler singing,” she said. “I also would not recommend it to someone who is really sensitive and would cry easily because it’s really sad.”

The previous movies Sunny Sandler participated in such as “You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah” released in 2023 and “Happy Gilmore 2” in 2025, leaned toward less emotional topics, mostly attracting tween or early teen audiences. However, “Don’t Say Good Luck” shows a new side of Sunny’s acting career–one where she expresses maturity, relatability and pulls at heart strings through her character.

When I first sat down to watch this movie, I would have never expected the ending, much less everything that happened in between. This movie led me to realize things that I take for granted that should be appreciated, especially when it comes to cherishing moments with family and friends.

The next time you sit down on your couch with nothing to watch, give “Don’t Say Good Luck” a chance– and make sure you have a tissue box handy.
